Visit of the representatives of foreign election monitoring organisations at the Curia

It was the fourth time during the year 2022 that the representatives of foreign election monitoring organisations visited the Curia of Hungary. The most recent delegation was received by Prof. Dr. András Zs. Varga, President of the Curia of Hungary, the Curia’s Vice-President responsible for ensuring uniform jurisprudence, the Deputy Head of the Curia’s Administrative Chamber and the Head of the Curia’s International Department on 31 March 2022.

Prof. Dr. András Patyi, Vice-President of the Curia of Hungary responsible for ensuring uniform jurisprudence, the Deputy Head of the Curia’s Administrative Chamber and the Head of the Curia’s International Department received, on 29 March 2022, the delegation of the Election Observation Mission to Hungary of the European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations (ENEMO).

Prof. Dr. András Zs. Varga, President of the Curia of Hungary, the Curia’s Vice-President responsible for ensuring uniform jurisprudence, the Head of the Curia’s Administrative Chamber and the Head of the Curia’s International Department received, in the morning of 11 March 2022 in the premises of the Curia, the delegation of the Election Observation Mission to Hungary of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

The Curia of Hungary was consulted by the European Commission’s representatives on the Rule of Law Report

Prof. Dr. András Zs. Varga, President of the Curia of Hungary, and the Curia’s Vice-Presidents, Secretary General, Heads of Chambers as well as the Head of the Curia’s International Department were engaged, in the afternoon of 1 March 2022, in an online consultation with the European Commission’s representatives on the country chapter on Hungary of the European Commission’s 2022 Rule of Law Report.

Measures taken by the Parliament and the Curia to strengthen the independence of the judiciary

In Autumn 2021, the Venice Commission examined the December 2020 amendments to the Act on the Organisation and Administration of the Courts (Courts Act) and the Act on the Status and Remuneration of Judges (Judgeship Act). The opinion no. CDL-AD(2021)036 adopted at the Venice Commission’s 128th session, held from 15 to 16 October 2021, welcomed the uniformity complaint procedure that may be initiated by the parties to the case and did not object to a limited system of precedents, finding them to be in line with the rule of law.
