The President of the Curia of Hungary bestowed an Amicus Curiae award on Mr. Gianni Buquicchio, the outgoing President of the Venice Commission

Prof. Dr. András Zs. Varga, the President of the Curia of Hungary participated, as the Venice Commission’s Hungarian member, at the 127th Plenary Session of the Venice Commission held on 1-3 July 2021 in Venice, Italy.

At the Friday, 2 July sitting of the Plenary Session, the President of the Curia of Hungary bestowed the Amicus Curiae medal and diploma on Mr. Gianni Buquicchio, the outgoing President of the Venice Commission.

The bestowing of the above award was solemnly announced in the presence of all the justices of the Curia at the Curia’s Plenary Session held on 21 June 2021. Due to the epidemiological situation, the award winner could not attend the Curia’s Plenary Session to receive his award in person, therefore it was handed over to him by the Hungarian Chief Justice at the Venice Commission’s Plenary Session.

In view of the professional career of Mr. Gianni Buquicchio who is about to leave his office as President of the Venice Commission, his outstanding role in the Council of Europe between 1971 and 2009, as well as his achievements as continuously re elected President of the Venice Commission since 2009, the President of the Curia of Hungary wished to acknowledge that, during his career, Mr. Gianni Buquicchio had always acted as a good friend of the Curia of Hungary (Amicus Curiae), had actively participated in the preparation of the Venice Commission’s opinions and recommendations in respect of Hungary and had constantly sought to ensure that the Venice Commission’s recommendations be as balanced as possible in order to promote the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law.
