In the development of the Curia’s international relations, the official visit of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom to Hungary from 6 to 8 May has been of particular importance. At the invitation of Prof. Dr. András Zs. Varga, President of the Curia, The Lord Reed of Allermuir, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom; Lord Hodge, Deputy President of the Supreme Court; Lord Richards and Lady Simler, justices of the Supreme Court; and Registrar Laura Angus were welcomed at the Curia.

The meeting represents an important step forward in promoting dialogue and cooperation between two legal systems that are very different in terms of their legal solutions, but are related in their origins and are faced with very similar challenges in contemporary society.

The talks covered a wide range of topics: the participating judges discussed issues relating to the operations of the two courts, the role and development of the precedent system, experiences gained regarding transparency and public access to the courts, and the challenges of using state-of-the-art technology in the administration of justice.

As part of the official programme, Lord Reed gave a presentation to the judges and chief advisers of the Curia, providing an insight into the doctrinal considerations involved in departing from case-law.
