European Commissioner for Rule of Law Visits the President of the Curia of Hungary

On 24 March 2025, Prof. Dr. András Zs. Varga, President of the Curia of Hungary, received Mr. Michael McGrath, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, in his office. The Commissioner arrived in Budapest for a two-day official visit during which he held professional consultations with the President of the Curia. During their discussions, they touched upon various questions relating to the different European interpretations of the rule of law, the judges’ freedom of expression, and the Curia’s case allocation system among other issues.

At the meeting, the Commissioner thanked the President of the Curia for the regular contributions and comments that were sent by Hungary’s highest judicial forum over the past years in preparation of the Commission’s rule of law reports.

Prof. Dr. András Zs. Varga gave a historical overview of the Hungarian constitutional and customary law system, as well as the evaluation of the rule of law reports.

As far as the Curia’s case allocation system is concerned, the President of the Curia emphasized that it is an automated system free from external interference and it fully guarantees the objective and transparent allocation of cases between the individual adjudicative panels.
